Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 4, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Sendero Maps ("Sendero Maps", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the Sendero Maps mobile application (the “App”) and the senderomapping.com website (the “Site”, together the “Services”). By using the Services you agree to the practices described here.
1. A quick summary
- We collect the information you give us (your account, hikes, photos, reviews) and the location the App needs to navigate and record trails.
- Your precise location powers navigation and — only when you start a hike with our safety feature — is shared with the trusted contacts you choose.
- Payments are handled by Apple; we never see your card details.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we don’t use third-party advertising networks.
- You can view, correct, export, or delete your account and data from within the App.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you provide
- Account details — email address, password (stored only in hashed form by our authentication provider), display name, and username. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the basic profile information those services share (such as your name and email).
- Profile content — an optional profile photo and any details you add.
- Trusted contacts (safety feature) — the name, and email address and/or phone number, of the people you designate as emergency contacts. You are responsible for confirming these people are willing to be contacted. See Section 4.
- Hiking activity — trails you favorite or mark complete, hike statistics (distance, elevation gain, duration), reviews and ratings you write, and people you follow.
- Photos — images you upload for trails or your profile.
- Support & forms — if you contact us, submit a bug report, or join a waitlist, we collect the information you send (e.g., name, email, message) plus basic app and device details to help us respond.
- AI questions — the questions you ask our “Scout,” “Ask the Trail,” and trip-planning features, along with related trail or park context. See Section 5.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Location data. With your permission, the App accesses your device’s precise GPS location to show your position, provide turn-by-turn and AR navigation, and record a hike. When you use the Send-my-Route safety feature, the App also collects location in the background during an active hike so your trusted contacts can follow along and be alerted if you don’t return on time. You can revoke location access at any time in your device settings (some features will stop working without it).
- Subscription status. When you purchase a Cumbre subscription, Apple processes the transaction. We receive your subscription status and renewal/expiration events from Apple so we can unlock paid features. We do not receive your payment card or billing details.
- Device & technical data. Basic information such as app version and device model may be included with support requests or error logs to keep the Services working. The Site may record limited technical information (such as your IP address and general interactions) through the providers listed in Section 6.
3. How we use your information
- Provide, operate, and maintain the Services — navigation, discovery, trail knowledge, and your account.
- Enable social and progress features you choose to use (favorites, completions, reviews, follows, leaderboards).
- Deliver the safety features you enable, including live location sharing and overdue-return alerts.
- Process and recognize your subscription and unlock paid content.
- Answer your questions through our AI features and respond to your support requests.
- Protect the Services, prevent abuse, and comply with our legal obligations.
- Improve the Services and develop new features.
4. The Send-my-Route safety feature
When you start a hike with Send-my-Route enabled, we generate a private tracking link and periodically store your location while the hike is active. The people you have added as trusted contacts can use that link to see your last known location, and — if you do not check in by the estimated return time you set — they may receive an automated email alerting them and linking to that location.
Please only add people who have agreed to be your trusted contacts. You can add or remove contacts, and end or delete a hike, at any time in the App. Location data associated with a completed or deleted hike is handled as described in Section 8.
5. AI features
Our conversational features (for example “Scout,” “Ask the Trail,” and trip planning) send your question together with relevant trail, park, or region context to our AI provider, Anthropic, which processes it to generate a response. Please avoid including sensitive personal information in these questions. Do not treat AI-generated content as professional, medical, safety, or navigational advice — always use your own judgment on the trail.
6. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these circumstances:
- With people you choose — trusted contacts (safety), and other users where you make information public (e.g., a public profile, reviews, or leaderboard standing).
- With service providers who process data on our behalf under contract, including:
- Supabase — database, authentication, file storage, and backend functions.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple and App Store subscription processing.
- Google — Sign in with Google.
- Mapbox — map rendering and related mapping services.
- Anthropic — AI features (Section 5).
- HubSpot — support tickets and Site chat/analytics.
- Resend — transactional and safety emails.
- Open-Meteo — weather forecasts (a location may be sent to retrieve a forecast; no account information is shared).
- Cloudflare — website hosting, content delivery, and security.
- For legal reasons — to comply with the law, enforce our terms, or protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or others.
- In a business transfer — as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
Each provider’s own privacy practices govern the data they handle; we encourage you to review them.
7. Cookies and similar technologies
The Site uses cookies and similar technologies for essential functionality, security (via Cloudflare), and to operate our support/chat and basic analytics (via HubSpot). You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling some may affect how the Site works. The App does not use advertising cookies.
8. Data retention
We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Services, then delete or de-identify it within a reasonable period, unless a longer period is required by law. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify the personal information associated with it, except limited records we must retain for legal, security, or accounting purposes. Location data collected during a hike is retained to power the safety and hike-history features and is removed when you delete the associated hike.
9. Your choices and rights
- Access & update — view and edit your profile and account information in the App.
- Delete — permanently delete your account and associated data from within the App (Account settings), or by contacting us.
- Location — grant or revoke location and background-location permission in your device settings.
- Communications — safety alerts are tied to features you enable; you can turn those features off.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (such as to access, correct, delete, or port your data, or to object to certain processing). To exercise any right, contact us at privacy@senderomapping.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
9.1 California residents
If you are a California resident, you may request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected, request deletion, and request correction, subject to legal exceptions. We do not sell or “share” personal information as those terms are defined under California law.
9.2 Users outside the United States
Our Services are operated in the United States. If you access them from another country, you understand your information will be processed in the United States, which may have different data protection rules than your jurisdiction.
10. Children’s privacy
The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, database row-level access controls, and secure on-device storage of authentication tokens. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Services after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
